William S, skipper for the evening, won the toss and correctly invited Chorley to bat. There was some concern among the players as word got out that Chorley had beaten Kirkham, but it doesn't matter who you have beaten or lost to in previous games as it is all about today! It only takes 1 ball and it only took 1 ball in the first over for William S to send their opening batter back to the sidelines. Our bowling today was actually as good it has ever been. We bowled well as a unit and bowled less wides than any previous game. William E picked up 2 wickets in one over as did William C. Sam bowled 1, and it was a wicket maiden, as did Lydia. Lydia's first ever was the best ever she has ever bowled. William E also ran one of their batters out with a direct hit. Benedict bowled well and they only scored 3 runs from his 2 overs. Sam only conceded 1 run from his 2 over - the best that he has bowled for 2 - 3 games.. Josh bowled his steady line and length and was unlucky to be bowling against some of their batters who were clearly looking to score positively near the end of the game. Isaac reportedly not feeling 100% bowled well only conceding 6 runs. I was pleased with our general bowling performance. Against another side or Chorley on another day we could have bowled them out for 70.
On to the batting; Batting needs a different mindset than bowling. If you bowl a bad ball it gets hit for 4 but you have another chance on the next bowl to get a wicket. With batting you make one mistake and that's the end of your innings. You don't get a second chance. Yes we had a few ducks in this game but name any player from any level from club to country everyone, yes everyone, has had a duck. If we get a low score we have got to think well next time I bat I'm going to make the most of it. Luckily, we have got another chance to score some runs 2 days later. Even though it wasn't our finest batting hour there were some positive things. Isaac batted the best I have seen him bat for years! William S got out trying to hit a boundary (no problem with that! On another day it clears the fielder for 6 or goes to either side of him for 4! Harvey batted well and hung in there. William E scored 10 and is getting more consistent every time he plays and William C played very well hitting some excellent shots for his 16. So a loss but its only 1 loss on 1 day. |
How we can improve
Learn to bat defensively against a spinning ball.
|
What we must learn from this gameJust bat against the ball that you are facing and not the bowler. When bowling just bowl that good ball and regardless of the batter they will get out from time to time. Don't lose the game in your mind before we have started.
